iPhone 7 Vs Infinix Hot S Vs Gionee M5 Plus – Compare Specs & Price of Latest iPhone 7, Infinix Hot Note And Gionee M5 Plus Smartphones – Find Which is Better
No doubt Apple is at the center of the internet now with the release of its 2016 flagship devices, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 7 is the smaller variant with just as much features as its bigger brother. It will surely appeal to people who desire high-end smartphone features with a compact size.
Coming to Nigeria, however, the iPhone 7 is bound to face some stiff competition from already-established devices in the Nigerian market, smartphones like the Infinix Hot S and Gionee M5 Plus. Though these devices are not really better than the iPhone 7 when you look at them collectively, but individually each can stand its own against the iPhone 7. In this article I pit Apple’s iPhone 7 against Infinix’s lifestyle smartphone Hot S and Gionee’s flagship M5 Plus. I’m going to compare them according to their specifications (display, design, memory, battery, hardware, software, etc) and when I’m done, I’ll leave you to choose which one is best for you. Enjoy.

iPhone 7 vs Infinix Hot S vs Gionee M5 Plus – Device Comparison
To make it easier for you to breeze through, here is a table of contents. Click on any of them to jump to the content:
Display & Design
The iPhone 7 is the smallest of the three devices with a screen size of 4.7 inches. The Infinix Hot S is next; it has a screen size of 5.2 inches. As you would expect, the Gionee M5 Plus is the largest of the trio, totalling a screen size of 6 inches.
In terms of display resolution and pixel density, the iPhone 7 is on the lower rung with a resolution of 1334 * 750. The Infinix Hot S is on par with the Gionee M5 Plus, both having display resolution of 1920 * 1080 (Full HD). The Hot S however surpasses the M5 Plus with a 424 pixel density, the latter having a pixel density of 368. The iPhone 7 is least with a pixel density of 326.
In terms of design, the three devices are designed with metal and have curved edges; all give their users a premium feel. However, the class associated with iPhones in general gives the iPhone 7 an edge over the other smartphones.
The iPhone 7 is the lightest of the three smartphones with a weight of 138 grams. It is followed by the Infinix Hot S with a weight of 140g, and finally the Gionee M5 Plus weighing in at a massive 208 grams. The large weight of the M5 Plus is probably due to its large battery size….more on that later.
Performance & Storage
The iPhone 7 is bound to surpass the other two smartphones in terms of processor performance; it is powered by Apple’s own A10 Fusion chipset, the successor to the A9 chipset used in the iPhone 6S which has been able to successfully defend its title of best performance against other flagship devices since last year when it was released up to this time. I wonder which smartphone would be able to beat the A10 processor.
The Infinix Hot S and Gionee M5 Plus are however not bad on their own; they are both powered by octa-core MTK 6753 chipsets. While the Hot S relies on a newer Mali-T680 GPU for graphics processing, the M5 Plus makes use of an older but powerful Mali-T720 GPU running on MP3 technology. The iPhone 7 however surpasses both; it uses a six-core graphics processor.
In terms of memory, the iPhone 7 comes with a RAM capacity of 2GB like previous iterations of the iPhone. The Infinix Hot S comes with two RAM variants of 2GB and 3GB, while the Gionee M5 Plus stays on the upper end with 3GB of RAM capacity. Of the three, the Apple iPhone 7 seems to be the one with the lowest processor memory (RAM), but it is a well known fact that Apple iPhones have good RAM management and actually perform better than Android smartphones with higher RAM capacities.
The iPhone 7 comes in a variety of internal storage capacities; the base ROM variant is 32GB, the next is 128GB and the upper ROM variant is 256GB. The Infinix Hot S is next with 16GB and 32GB ROM variants, and the Gionee M5 Plus comes with standard 64GB ROM capacity. Though the iPhone 7 has better internal storage options than the other two smartphones, the higher variants are very expensive, and if you ever get lucky ( ) enough to be stuck with the 32GB internal storage variant, there is no way you can expand it when it becomes full; the only resort is to start performing gallery sanitation, that is to start deleting old, unneeded and large files that are filling up the memory. The Infinix Hot S comes with a microSD slot which allows you to expand the internal memory up to 128GB, and the Gionee M5 Plus has a microSD slot which allows internal storage expansion up to 256GB.
Software & Hardware
The Gionee M5 Plus was released in December last year (2015), and booted Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box at that time. Up till now however, there has been no software update (to Android 6.0 Marshmallow), and considering that Android 7.0 Nougat has been released (you know, OEMs gonna be busy with it), I don’t think there is hope of the Gionee M5 Plus getting Marshmallow update. The Infinix Hot S however is more up to date; it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. As you would expect, the iPhone 7 runs iOS 10 out of the box with bundles of new software tweaks and features. That’s not to say the others don’t have their own unique software features. Let’s start with the Hot S.
The Infinix Hot S runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow which is built on the new Infinix custom user interface (UI), XOS. It has been refined and improved upon from the last UI version XUI. With features like Freezer which helps to hibernate background apps when they’re not in use, and various power saving settings, the Infinix Hot S doesn’t disappoint.
The Gionee M5 Plus comes with version 3.1 of Gionee’s custom UI Amigo, which gives it a lot of customizable features and improvements over previous versions of the user interface.
The iPhone 7 comes with iOS 10 which in turn comes with a lot of software tweaks and features. One of such features is Apple’s Siri, the voice assistant for iPhones which does the job of personal assistant very effectively. Another is iCloud and so many others.
On the hardware side, all three smartphones feature fingerprint scanners, but they all have different functions. The fingerprint on the back of the Infinix Hot S can be used to unlock the phone and take selfies, as well as scroll through the multimedia gallery. That on the Gionee M5 Plus is primarily for unlocking the phone, and the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 7 is embedded in its redesigned home button and uses Touch ID to unlock the phone.
Camera
The iPhone 7 has a 12MP rear camera while the Hot S and M5 Plus both have 13MP rear camera units. Though the iPhone 7 camera seems to be smaller in numbers, iPhone cameras have been known to beat other smartphone cameras when it comes to real life testing.
All three cameras have phase-detection-auto-focus (PDAF) and come with different variants of LED flash; the Gionee M5 Plus has a single LED flash, the Infinix Hot S comes with a double LED flash setup, and the iPhone 7 tops it with a dual-tone quad-LED flash setup.
Moving over to the front, the Infinix Hot S has 8MP selfie camera accompanied with a LED flash. The iPhone 7 follows with a 7MP camera unit at the front packed with a lot of tweaks and features for better picture quality. It also has the retina flash feature for better selfie picture quality in low-light conditions. The Gionee M5 Plus comes with a 5MP selfie camera with 1080p video recording and no flash features whatsoever.
Battery & Charging
The Gionee M5 Plus excels well in this section, with its monster 5,020mAh Lithium Polymer battery which is able to provide up to two hours usage time. The Infinix Hot S follows with a 3,000mAh Li-Po battery, while the iPhone 7 lags behind with a 1,960mAh Lithium ion battery.
Some Apple fanboys would say that the capacity doesn’t matter because iPhones have good battery/ram management and all; but hey, it’s 2016 and all the hardware in the iPhone 7 is new and improved, so you don’t expect the iPhone 7 with a sub-2000mAh battery capacity to best the Gionee M5 Plus with super-5000mAh battery capacity in an endurance test. Take it or leave it!
Price
The Apple iPhone 7 is the most expensive of the three devices we’re comparing. The base 32GB ROM variant costs $649, the 128GB ROM variant costs $749 and the upper 256GB ROM variant is priced at $849. As the saying currently goes in Nigeria, it’s either you buy a plot of land in the highbrow Lekki area or you buy the iPhone 7; they cost the same .
As for the Infinix Note 3 and the Gionee M5 Plus, it is the general consensus that they are both worth the respective prices at which they are sold. The Infinix Note 3 costs N45,500 in Nigeria while the Gionee M5 Plus carries a price tag of around N100,000 in Nigeria.
No doubt the iPhone 7 is better at performance and software/hardware features than the other two devices, but if you’re looking to have a modern smartphone without breaking the bank, you should consider the Infinix Hot S or Gionee M5 Plus.
So, which do you think is the best among the iPhone 7, Infinix Hot S and Gionee M5 Plus based on our comparison above?
